As we approach the busy and often stressful Christmas season, mental health is at the forefront of many people's minds. Tapasā co-founder Kayla Schwalger was recently invited to speak on Tagata Pasifika, Aotearoa's flagship Pacific TV segment on TVNZ, where she shared her powerful insights on the importance of mental health for young Pacific people, especially during this festive period.

Kayla joined Marama T-Pole, a seasoned Pacific media personality and co-host of Tagata Pasifika, to discuss the challenges young people face and how mental health is a critical issue in the Pacific community. Marama, who has dedicated her career to amplifying Pacific voices, engaged Kayla in a thought-provoking conversation about the pressures many young Pacific people experience, particularly as the festive season can sometimes exacerbate mental health struggles.

During the interview, Kayla shared her personal journey co-founding Tapasā with Ruta Tonumaivao, an organisation dedicated to creating meaningful change in the Pacific community and addressing wellbeing through systems change. As a Y25 honouree, Kayla underscored the importance of resilience and support for Pacific youth during this time.

The conversation also touched on practical tips for the Christmas period, offering guidance on managing stress, nurturing family connections, and prioritising mental health. Kayla highlighted the need for families to stay connected to their culture, not just as a means of preserving identity, but as a way to uplift overall wellbeing.

In a world where mental health can often be overlooked, especially in Pacific families, Kayla’s words serve as an urgent reminder: staying connected to culture and community can help us overcome challenges and foster resilience, especially during stressful times like Christmas.

As we head into the holiday season, remember, your wellbeing matters. Reach out for support if you need it – help is always available.
