West Auckland, NZ – In a profound and enlightening event, Tapasā's co-founder, Ruta, led a transformative workshop at Community Waitākere titled "An Indigenous Approach to Community Development: Unlocking the Power of Le Vā." This workshop delved deep into the concept of Vā, the relational space that binds and gives meaning to all things, playing a crucial role in the fabric of Pasifika communities.
Ruta shared her parents' migration story, highlighting the collective journey and interconnectedness of all Pasifika peoples. She emphasized the significance of Vā, explaining that it is not merely the space between entities, but the space that relates and holds these entities together in a unified whole. This understanding of Vā is foundational for Pasifika communities, as it is where relationships are formed, nurtured, and maintained.
"By understanding the Vā, we can unlock the power of Pasifika communities and create sustainable and meaningful change," Ruta stated during the workshop. She provided insights into how Vā can be utilized as an engagement method in Pasifika settings, fostering deeper connections and more effective community work.
The workshop received glowing feedback from participants, including Lynnette Van Nes, a Neighbourhood Developer at Community Waitākere Charitable Trust. "I felt so honoured to be a part of it with you all, and I know I gained some great insights into my own life as well as principles to incorporate into my community work," she remarked. "A huge thank you to our facilitator Ruta who provided a safe and sacred space to learn."
